Fighting
Summary: News accounts of violence by children towards children has become all too frequent. The latest brazen display of child-to-child violence was the recent beating of a 12-year-old girl by a group of older girls. This incident in North Babylon, Long Island seemed even more heinous since the fight was posted on the Internet for all to see. This latest phenomenon is called cyber-bullying.
Some of the issues you may want to discuss with your children about body image are:
- Fighting is not a way to solve disagreements.
- Let your children know they can talk openly and honestly with you about threats made by other children.
- Help them to understand that harmful words and actions are not okay. Just because other kids say and do hurtful things does not make it right.
- Explain to young children that, unlike on television, real kicks and punches can seriously hurt someone.
Here are some questions you may want to ask your kids:
- Has anyone ever made fun of you at school?
- Has anyone ever threatened you?
- Does anyone pick on you?
- Has anyone ever pushed you?
- Has anyone ever hit you?
