Self-Esteem/Sense of Self

Self-esteem, or sense of self, is crucial to a child's success in life. And while there will inevitably be times when children (especially adolescents) doubt their self-worth, it is vitally important for children to develop a positive self-concept.

Some questions to ask yourself about your interaction with your child/children. Do you ever...

  • Compare them with others, especially brothers and sisters?
  • Ignore them, or not take an interest in their hobbies, interests, pursuits?
  • Say something bad about them; call them lazy, naughty, stupid, a nuisance, a bully, or other derogatory terms?
  • Say that life would be better without them, or "I wish you hadn't been born"?

These types of messages, even when said "innocently," can destroy a child's self-esteem.

This program, available in 2008, will examine ways in which parents can help their children develop a healthy sense of self.

Teaching Body Confidence

Each year, millions of Americans are diagnosed with eating disorders, and 90% of those diagnosed are adolescent and young women. Even more alarming, this number has doubled since the 1960s, with the age groups getting younger, as young as seven years of age.

Our Teaching Body Confidence webinar, presented by Rebecca L. Manley, Founder of the Multiservice Eating Disorders Association, (MEDA), offers recommendations for helping children develop a healthy body image.
