Self-esteem, or sense of self, is crucial to a child's success in life.
And while there will inevitably be times when children (especially
adolescents) doubt their self-worth, it is vitally important for
children to develop a positive self-concept.
Some questions to ask yourself about your interaction with your child/children. Do you ever...
- Compare them with others, especially brothers and sisters?
- Ignore them, or not take an interest in their hobbies, interests, pursuits?
- Say something bad about them; call them lazy, naughty, stupid, a nuisance, a bully, or other derogatory terms?
- Say that life would be better without them, or "I wish you hadn't been born"?
These types of messages, even when said "innocently," can destroy a child's self-esteem.
This program examines ways in which parents can help their children develop a healthy sense of self.
