Someone Took Vanessa's Bike #4
Learning That Actions Have Consequences
Vanessa loves her new bike. She rides it everyday with her best friends, Kate and Beth. One day, her friends ask Vanessa to ride with them to the comic book store. At first, Vanessa’s mother says no because Vanessa doesn’t have a lock for her bike. But Vanessa begs her mother to let her go, promising not leave her bike alone. Vanessa loves her new bike and wants to have it forever. Yet, she will make a decision that teaches her a difficult, but valuable lesson.
Having to deal with the consequences of our decisions and actions is very difficult. But for a child, the consequences are much more difficult to understand. In Someone Took Vanessa’s Bike, Vanessa learns what it feels like to make a decision about her new bike and to have to deal with the outcome of that decision.
Making Time For Children
Listening and talking to children is one of the most important learning experiences in life for both children and adults. Children who have someone special to talk with, someone who listens to them, possess a precious gift. Whether they are talking about school, their friends, the games they like to play, or the happy or sad things in their lives, children need to be listened to.
What People Are Saying…
"Contrary to what we would like, the world is not always a happy place for a child. There are friendships lost, and those who won’t share their toys (or who want you to share your favorite toy), or things that just don’t work out the way you would like."
"Someone Took Vanessa’s Bike is the story of a realistic occurrence in the life of a child: her bike is stolen. But it is more. It is also about the decisions Vanessa makes, and the consequences of those decisions. Yet, even more than that, it is about how a young child, when provided love, structure, and guidance makes even an unhappy event turn into one about which she can feel good."
"Someone Took Vanessa’s Bike provides a wonderful opportunity for parents, grandparents, teachers and all those who care about children to share a story with a message that is valuable and long-lasting."
— John Farrell, fifth grade teacher at Howard County Maryland Public Schools, and father of three and grandfather of two.
